Remember when you were a kid and flying was the coolest thing you ever got to do? It’s the closest thing to realizing your superhero dreams and it feels amazing.
Unfortunately, when you’re older, flying loses a bit of that appeal. You’re taller so the ride is uncomfortable and if you’re a frequent flier, you’re probably doing it for business and not pleasure. Even if you’re just traveling to see family for the holidays, flying has a way of making you feel exhausted. Luckily, Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) has some great, locally-sourced options for a quick refuel whether you’re on your first leg or your last.
If you’re in the North or McNamara Terminals at DTW and craving a good Coney Dog, stop into National Coney Island. Of course, Coneys aren’t the only thing on the menu. You’ll find all the classics, like gyro sandwiches, breakfast all day and these locations are two of the few National Coney Islands that serve beer and wine.

Plum Market Wine Bar and Cafe
As with all Plum Market locations, the McNamara Terminal location brings fresh food in both a grocery store and restaurant style. Known as “grocerants,” here you’ll be able to find snacks and drinks you can take to-go and a menu of food prepared in-house. Grab a seat at the bar or one of the communal high-top tables to enjoy a healthy meal before or after boarding your next flight. Harvest & Grounds One of the most sought after beverages for frequent fliers is a good cup of coffee. Rest easy knowing that at Harvest & Grounds in the McNamara Terminal you can find freshly made bread and pastries from Detroit-based Avalon Bakery and coffee from Ann Arbor’s Mighty Good Coffee Roasting Co. If you’re heading to or out of DTW and some authentic Middle-Eastern cuisine sounds like it will hit the spot, Beirut Restaurant is known across metro Detroit for serving delicious shawarma, shish kabob, hummus and more. If you’re craving authentic Italian food and need it in a jiffy, Leonardo’s Italian Grille will be happy to oblige. Everything from the bruschetta to the sandwiches and pizza are good to the last bite. For you pasta lovers, there’s a “Build Your Own” feature where you can choose the noodles, sauce and more. ‘Tis the season of travel, so if you’re planning on taking off from or landing in DTW to see family and friends, keep these eateries in mind.
